eeeTheCallofCthulhu,writtenin1926byH.PLovecraftisacentralpieceinthehorror-genre.LovecraftrenewedHorrorwithhisstyleandideas.Manyhavetriedtoadapthisbookstothebigscreen,butnonehasbeenassuccessfulastheHPLHSwhojustrecentlycompletedtheirblackandwhitesilentversionofCallofCthulhu.Notonlydidtheyattempttomakeafaithfulandcreepyadaptation,butalsotomakeitlookasifitwasmadeinthetimeofLovecraft.Themovieisblessedwithterrificactorswhoallseemliketheygenuinelycareabouttheportrayalofthestory.AllperformancesaretopnotchwhichsignifiesthattheactorsareverytalentedaswellasgreatdirectingonpartofAndrewLeman.ThisistrulyoneofthegreatstrengthsofCallofCthulhu.Themoviehasareallyauthentic1920tiesfeeltoit.Theproducershavepayedmuchattentiontodetail;soeverythinglooksandfeelsgenuine.Anotherstrongpoint.Theadaptationitselfismagnificent.NeverbeforehaveIseensuchafaithfuladaptionofanyLovecraft-storyinmyentirelife.Nothingisrushed,itsallthereandeventhoughthemovieisonly45minuteslongitisjustasgoodattellingthestoryasLovecrafthimself.Themovieisfullofspecialeffects,stopmotionanimationandsoforth.Thismovieislowbudgetandindependent;andyesUniversalstudioswouldbeabletocreatemoreconvincingeffects,butthatisentirelyunessentialtothisfilmasitismadetofitthe1920tiesera.IfCthulhuhimselfweremadewithfancycomputeranimationthemoviewouldhavefailedatitsobjective;tobefaithfultothesilent-moviegenre.TobehonestIlovetheeffectsinCallofCthulhu.Theystrengthenthefeelofauthenticityandyounevermissthebigandpointlessexplosionsthatmainstreamcinemaoffers.IwouldpersonallyrecommendthismovietoanyonewithaninterestinHPLovecraft,Horror,Independentfilmsandvintagefilms.Ittrulyisremarkablygood.Ivealreadywatcheditthreetimes,andIloveitmoreforeachtime.IhopeyoullenjoyitasmuchasIhave.
